National UMM Ministries

The General Commission on UMM, (GCUMM), also sometimes referred to as the "national organization" in this website, coordinate numerous ministries around the country and around the world. They have been recently focusing on four areas which reach the world in the name of Christ. These four areas include: training UMM leaders to become advocates for the poor, expanding US hunger relief, supporting children of incarcerated parents, and and expanding efforts to stop global hunger.

Additional ministries supported by GCUMM are described below:

Strength for Service to God and Country

This is a small devotional booklet which was distributed to over a million of our troops in World War II and the Korean conflict before going out of print. Fifty years later, a Boy Scout named Evan Hunsberger took on the task of having this booklet republished as part of his Eagle Scout project. With a few minor editorial changes and some new additions, the new version of this booklet was released in 2002 and more then 400,000 copies have been distributed to people of all denominations. The General Commission on UMM is the organization behind the effort of getting this booklet distributed on a daily basis. To find out more about this devotional guide or how your men's group can purchase these devotional guides to distribute to military personal, service personnel, etc., go to the Strength for Service page.

Upper Room Living Prayer Center

The Upper Room Living Prayer Center is a 24 hour, 7 day per week intercessory prayer ministry staffed by Christian volunteers nationwide. More then 30,000 prayer requests are received monthly and the UMM help support this important ministry by manning the phones and praying for those in need. The Austin District UMM manned the phones after one of our quarterly breakfast meetings a couple of years ago.

Scouting Ministry

Scouting is a main ministry of the UMM. For more information see the Austin District UMM's Scouting Ministry page.

Society of St. Andrew

The Society of St. Andrew's main mission is to rescue food (various produce and potatoes) that would otherwise be wasted, either because it was left after the main harvest or deemed unmarketable - not because it was bad, but because it did not meet the specific criteria set by a company. United Methodist Men around the country help glean left over food from fields or load trucks full of potatoes that would otherwise be thrown away. These "leftovers" are then distributed to areas of need to feed the hungry.
